What is soy wax?
Soy wax is a vegetable wax created from the oil of soy beans.
The beans, after being harvested, are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes. The soybean oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process then converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. During this process the melting point of the oil dramatically alters, making it solid at room temperature. Nothing is wasted as the leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed.
Soy beans are a renewable source and the wax being vegetable based is naturally bio-degradable, so it is really is an eco-friendly product.
Because soy wax burns cleaner than paraffin wax, it doesn’t release toxic carcinogens in to the air.
Soy wax is not tested on animals.
Soy wax candles burn cleaner and produce as much as 90 percent less soot than paraffin.
The soy candle may accumulate some black soot on the container(especially if it burns longer than four hours), but in comparison the amount is much less than paraffin candles.
Soy candles are also non-toxic, so they won't release toxins into the air as they burn. And as all loyal soy wax candle owners know, soy wax candles hold fragrance very well and have brilliant hot & cold scent throw.
Another great benefit is that they burn slower – so your candle will last longer.
They also have a lower melt point so the molten soy wax is not as hot as regular paraffin candles.
Unlike paraffin wax candles, soy candles are easy to clean up after – this said, never move a lit candle. However spilt soy candle wax is very straightforward to clean up from most surfaces. As long as it is safe for your particular surface, warm soapy water on a cloth will remove soy wax.
Of course, do not forget that we sell candle plates which are perfect for protecting surfaces.
The wicks we use are made of pure cotton and thin paper filaments interlaced for a more stable and consistent burn. They consist of specially treated paper threads providing a controlled curling of the wick, however please trim this off and remove before relighting your solidified soy wax candle.
Burn your candle for no longer than three - four hours at a time.
Soy wax has a memory. Therefore it is so important that your first burn lasts at least two hours, so that full melt pool is achieved (the entire top surface turns to molten wax). This will avoid tunnelling.
As a general rule, natural soy wax can be a little on the temperamental side and may try to revert to its natural state. Sometimes temperature affects the wax, altering its appearance. Frosting or air pockets may occur and though they are visible, the candle is not defective or damaged. It will not hinder the burn and scent throw of the candle. These visual effects are out of our control.
Luxurious they may seem, but in conclusion, not only do soy wax candles last longer, they look amazing and are better for both the environment and your home.
Soy wax candles are always gratefully received as gifts. There is something very beautiful & elegant about a soy candle.
And finally they also hold their fragrance – so what is not to love?
Just remember to trim your wick (and clean your wick trimmers) before burning. If soot forms around the jar, extinguish the flame and trim the wick. One the wax has re-hardened, wipe the soot with a clean cloth or tissue.
Do have a look at our candle accessory section for wick dippers, trimmers and candle plates - we have a nice selection.
And once last thing, please reuse the jars. They are always high quality and very versatile when it comes to storage and reusability.
We really do hope you get as much happiness from your new soy candle as we did crafting it ♥
