When you first light your new candle, make sure your candle wick is no longer than 5mm long. Invest in some wick trimmers to do this safely, as this gives you a clean and neat cut across the wick.

Allow your candle to burn all the way across the top, so that the entire top surface of your candle is molten wax. This prevents tunnelling. The time this takes, will depend on the diameter of your candle.

Never leave a burning candle unattended – regardless of how small it may be. And keep all candles out of the reach of children & pets.

Keep candles away from draughts including windows.

Place your candle on a heatproof, steady surface, and preferably not a polished surface – the oils can cause damage. Ensure all flammable items are far from the candle.

Burn candles for no longer than four hours at a time (three hours is highly recommended). Extinguish earlier if the candle starts to soot.

Extinguish candles with a wick snuffer or wick dipper. This helps avoid the after-burn smell and avoids molten wax making a mess or spraying out. Straighten the wick upwards so that it will be easier to trim and doesn’t become embedded in the molten wax.

Store candles out of the sun. If possible, keep the wax covered to avoid dust and debris settling on the wax. Most candles will last 12-16 months. Anything older is still safe to use. You may just find the fragrance isn’t as strong, and the colour of the wax may alter depending on fragrance oils contained within.

If burning wood wick candles, the same rules apply, minus the straightening of the wick. A wick snuffer is recommended for extinguishing wood wicks.
Candle Care Tips

Soy wax has a memory – it tunnels if full melt pool has not occurred across the top surface of the candle.

Be aware of your surroundings when burning a candle. If doors and windows are open, the fragrance will not be as noticeable.

For container candles that have tunnelled, wrap tin foil around the jar, creating a jacket for your candle, leave the top open and free of foil. Burn (with supervision) for 2-3 hours.
Wick trimmers are the best way to cut the wick to 5mm. However, a new, designated pair of nail clippers also work if you’re on a budget.

A wick snuffer or wick dipper is the safest way to extinguish your candle. However, a designated teaspoon handle will also suffice if you’re on a budget. Simply use the teaspoon handle to push the wick into the molten wax, then straighten the wick.
